Transformation Leadership
Experts in Scaling High-Performing Systems
STEM 4 Education™ Expert Contributor Carlos Lauchu is a nationally recognized transformation leader, school founder, and systems innovator with more than 28 years of experience driving measurable performance gains in complex organizations. He is the founding leader of The Science Academy STEM Magnet in Los Angeles, where he built one of California’s highest-performing secondary schools and a nationally regarded model for integrated, equity-driven STEM education.
Born in Panama and raised in Michigan, Mr. Lauchu draws on his personal experience to expand opportunity for future leaders. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Pre-Medicine from the Lyman Briggs College of Science at Michigan State University and later earned his California Teaching Credential from California State University, Northridge, as well as an Administrative Services Credential from National University.
Mr. Lauchu began his career teaching AP sciences and mathematics at North Hollywood High School before moving to Millikan Middle School, where he founded The Science Academy in 1999. Starting with outdated computers, donated robotics equipment, and limited funding, he developed an innovative STEM program that quickly gained national attention. He was among the first educators in the country to implement Advanced Placement coursework at the middle school level, with students earning scores of 4s and 5s on AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and AP Physics exams – a rare achievement for that age group.
In 2015, he was appointed principal and led the expansion of his model into a standalone grades 6–12 Science Academy STEM Magnet. Under his leadership, the school became one of the top-performing STEM schools in California for more than a decade. Students consistently earned top AP scores, high state assessment results, and widespread academic recognition. Many graduates complete high school with an Associate of Arts degree through partnerships with local colleges, and the school has one of the highest acceptance rates to leading universities in the nation. In his final five years as principal, the school ranked #1 in LAUSD, the second-largest school district in the nation.
Beyond a single institution, Mr. Lauchu’s influence has shaped broader practice and policy. He served as an Academic Advisor to the College Board and contributed to national initiatives focused on advanced coursework access, STEM pathways, and instructional innovation. His leadership has been recognized by federal, state, and local leaders, and his work has informed decision-makers seeking sustainable performance improvement in complex systems.
Central to Mr. Lauchu’s success is his ability to build cultures of excellence – environments where clarity, accountability, and real-world application drive results. His work bridges strategy and execution, enabling leaders to align vision with implementation and achieve lasting gains in performance and outcomes.
Upon retiring from public education in 2026, Mr. Lauchu was honored with a City of Los Angeles Resolution for his extraordinary service and the lasting impact he has made on the city and its public schools.
He is now engaged by education systems, private institutions, and leadership organizations as a strategic advisor and keynote speaker. He works with senior leaders responsible for culture, performance, and human development to design scalable models, strengthen organizational rigor, and guide large-scale transformation initiatives. His work includes shaping principled frameworks that help organizations navigate the integration of emerging technologies, with a focus on clarity, transparency, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence in practice.
